Crop & Food’s research is grouped in five centres of innovation:

Sustainable land and water use
Crop & Food develops crop production systems that enhance productivity in balance with the environment, and meet consumer expectations for health, safety and quality. Increased production efficiency provides community-wide environmental, economic and social benefits.

High performance plants
Crop & Food uses a range of systems, including conventional and genetic techniques, to produce plants that are more valuable to industry and better meet the needs of consumers.

Personalised foods
Using their specialised knowledge staff at Crop & Food are developing foods and food products that are both nutritious and convenient and may lower the risk of disease. New knowledge is making it possible to personalise foods to meet individual needs. Go to our focus story: Future Foods

High value marine products
Seafood and functional ingredients extracted from discards from seafood processing provide huge opportunities to add value to New Zealand’s fishery resources. Crop & Food works with industry partners to develop and deliver postharvest processing technology and product innovation.

New biomolecules and biomaterials
Extracts from plants and marine fauna provide the raw materials for innovation in this area. Crop & Food is discovering novel properties and developing new uses for these natural products. Potential applications include agriculture, packaging, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals.

Crop & Food undertakes research in partnership with a range of local and international industry and government clients. Where appropriate, it commercialises and shares the value of research outcomes with its partners.
