GNS Science

Activities: Research, development, consultancy and analytical testing.

GNS Science is an internationally respected research and consultancy company owned by the New Zealand government. It specialises in earth sciences and isotope technologies.

GNS Science has expertise in:

  • New Zealand’s geology.
  • Earthquakes, volcanoes, landslides, and tsunamis; risk assessment and mitigation.
  • Oil, gas, geothermal energy, groundwater and mineral resources; evaluation and management.
  • Isotope chemistry and nuclear technology; developing and applying uses for industry, archaeology, fisheries, atmospheric research, oceanography, geology, hydrology, geochemistry, geothermal exploration and environmental monitoring.

The main focus of GNS Science’s biotechnology research is extremophiles. These microorganisms grow in extreme conditions, such as New Zealand’s volcanic areas and in hot springs. Extremophiles can survive in conditions that are very hot, acidic or alkaline, and where there is a lot of salt or elements that are normally toxic to living organisms. At GNS Science they are researching how extremophiles can absorb metals from solutions and whether this property can be used to make new biotechnologies.
