Ministry of Research, Science & Technology (MoRST) Te Manata Putaiao
Activities: Management, policy advice, commercialisation and collaboration.
The Ministry of Research, Science & Technology (MoRST) is a New Zealand government department which leads the Government's science and research strategy, manages public investment in science and advises on government policy. Their Maori name, Te Manatu Putaiao, means "the Ministry for Science".
Their mission is “to inspire and assist New Zealanders to achieve a better future through research and innovation”.
MoRST was established by Cabinet on 1 October 1989, as part of the reforms of the New Zealand science system. A key element of the reforms was the organisational separation of the Government’s involvement in:
- Science and technology policy (MoRST's role)
- Science funding (FRST's role)
- Carrying out research and development (Crown Research Institutes, etc).
Each year MoRST reports to the Minister of Research, Science and Technology on the difference research and innovation has made to the lives, environments and enterprises of New Zealanders.
