New Zealand Food Safety Authority
Activities: Advice, regulation, monitoring, policy-making and research.
The New Zealand Food Safety Authority (NZFSA) advises consumers about all aspects of food safety. It monitors food production, processing and sale of all food. This includes food that is produced in New Zealand, and food that is imported into or exported from New Zealand.
The NZFSA administers legislation covering:
- Food for sale in New Zealand
- Primary processing of animal products and official assurances related to their export
- Exports of plant products and the controls surrounding registration and use of agricultural compounds and veterinary medicines.
NZFSA also reports on research and development in food safety and risk assessment. This research plays a pivotal role in identifying, assessing and managing potential food borne risks to human health in New Zealand.
