Riddet Institute
Activities: Research, development and education
The Riddet (rid-it) Institute was established in February 2003 and gained status as a Centre of Research Excellence (CoRE) in June 2007. Partners in the CoRE are Massey University, University of Otago, University of Auckland, and the Crown Research Institutes; AgResearch and Crop & Food Research.
The Riddet Institute focuses on food science and human nutrition, particularly on functional foods and ingredients and innovative solutions for the food industry. Food is New Zealand’s most significant economic sector, accounting for over half of New Zealand’s export earnings.
Future foods and nutrition
A unique aspect of the Riddet Institute is it’s multi-disciplinary approach to foods and nutrition health/research. Greater depth and new perspectives are made possible with CoRE funding and through new partners and disciplines such as: structural chemistry, soft material physics, advanced mathematics and bioengineering. The research theme of the CoRE is ‘Future Foods – Inspired by Nature’.
The Institute is named after Professor William Riddet, one of New Zealand’s foremost food scientists. He was integral to the establishment of Massey Agricultural College in 1927, held the foundation chair in agriculture and was also made director of the Dairy Research Institute.
