Activities: Research, development and education

Crown Research Institute Scion is pioneering the movement towards a bio-based economy through the development of next generation biomaterials and solutions.

Globally, primary production industries are being driven to adopt innovative technology solutions that meet long-term sustainability drivers while still delivering economic performance.

Scion has responded to this international demand by providing ground-breaking, wide ranging technical and scientific capabilities to companies, from chemicals and biopolymers created from biomaterials and microbial biodiscovery, to modification of plant cells, through to transforming industrial wastes into economic and environmental positives.

Our industrial biotechnology applications include enzymatic and/or thermo chemical/mechanical transformations of lignocellulosic plant fibres and their components. This expertise is built on 60 years of plantation forestry research.

Key research areas include:

  • Biomaterials including bioplastics, lignins and instruments to study, monitor and control biotechnology and bioprocess systems.
  • Biofuel and bioenergy including bioethanol produced from trees and grasses.
  • Built environment – sustainable, energy-efficient, cost-effective housing.
  • Forestry remains a key part of Scion’s business, as plant-based biomaterials play a larger role in industrial manufacturing, energy creation and the built environment.
