Clare completed a first class honours degree in biochemistry at the University of Auckland. During holidays, she worked as a quality control laboratory technician at Healtheries NZ Limited, as a laboratory demonstrator at Auckland University, and as a research technician at the ESR Forensic Biology lab.
After completing her degree, she joined Genesis Research and Development Corporation Limited in June 1995.
Her education also includes a Certificate of Proficiency in Forensics at Auckland University (1996), and a paper in Project Management from Auckland University of Technology (2001).

Clare is a current member of the Forensic Science Society.
