William is studying for a Masters of Applied Science, majoring in Farm Management Consultancy, at Lincoln University. William says “ I am really enjoying the next step up from a bachelors degree that the masters offers. “

William is relishing the chance to put his own spin on things and challenge current practices where he sees an opportunity.

William’s masters studies involve a lot of reading and summarising current literature. He then current scientific practices and identifies opportunities for farmers to improve practice.

As part of his masters, William will undertake a dissertation project, to analyse the current levels of milk production in relation to irrigation on dairy farms. From his research, William hopes to be able to provide farmers with benchmark figures and best practices to aim for with their irrigation systems.

William is a recipient of the New Zealand Dairy Industry Undergraduate Scholarship which he was awarded in 2004. His tuition fees have been paid by the dairy industry since then. William is also received a Dave McGrath Memorial Scholarship from Dairy InSight, which helps him to meet the costs of his masters dissertation.

Career Pathway

William grew up on a dairy farm and has always had a passion for agriculture. He chose to study at Lincoln and take a degree that offered a good range of both production and commerce papers.

With interests in farm operation and the business side of farming, William focused on farm management, which includes the production side of farming, animal science, pasture production, business analysis, and consultancy practice.

Ultimately, William wants to be a dairy farmer. He is currently weighing up whether to go straight into dairy farming or to enter the rural professional industry. His decision will be based on which career best meets his personal and business goals.

No matter the decision he makes, William is planning on being personally involved in a dairy farm operation and getting as involved in the industry as possible. He envisions gradually progressing into roles, such as being on the Fonterra Board, so he can influence the direction of the dairy industry to benefit the farming community.

Interests

William enjoys all sorts of sports, including waterskiing, snowboarding, and tennis.

He is also a member of the Young Farmers Club. He competed in the National Bank Young Farmer of the year competition where he got into the Tasman regional final and finished fifth.

William also likes working on the farm whenever his schedule at university allows. He also enjoys the social life that university offers.
