Many dietary supplements contain biologically-derived nutritional ingredients, for example from whole bone extracts, green-lipped mussels, and cartilage-based products. Christchurch company, Waitaki Biosciences, is looking for a vegetarian alternative to these animal extracts.

The firm also hopes to find extracts that support our immune system and promote gut health.

“We are putting time and money into products that can be processed out of raw materials that are unique to New Zealand, and looking at other ingredients that will cater to different markets that don’t take animal products,” the firm’s export manager Campbell Naish says.

New Zealand’s strong network of research organisations and teams with specialist knowledge in horticulture, agriculture and animal products could be of great help, and Mr Naish says if everything goes to plan a new botanical product could be available within a year.
