Annette Campbell (Baking Industry Research Trust): My role now is, is working essentially in industry as a food consultant – working between researchers and industry, in order to make sure great science is taken through into great food – and to do that, I’ve got a background in biochemistry and computer science, associated with about 20 years of working within the food industry itself.
The most important skill that I need for my job – apart from my science degree – is actually my communication ability. And I think that’s a really key thing that you need to think about if you’re going into science is that, when you’re looking at your degree, that you need to think about making sure that you pick up some skills that will allow you to communicate that science to others in a straightforward manner.
So I’ve always encouraged students to, when they’re going into science, to think about doing something like history, or doing something like English, in order to broaden your knowledge base and give you that ability to interact with others.
