Transcript

Young Mee Yoon (Comvita): I did a PhD mainly for teaching and doing research in the university for a start, but while I was doing that, I found my interest was in more commercial-related research.

I never thought I would work for the bee industry, but I found that, with my knowledge of the general science area, I could adapt into industry quite quickly. And after that I was in a position to lead the industry. In fact, I created a code of practice for the bee industry and also I created medical-grade honey systems.

So I would say to students that, while they are studying science, have a good knowledge of all general areas of science, for example, biochemistry, chemistry, microbiology, and other biotechnology areas.

Once you have some basic knowledge, then you can get into industry easily, and any specific area or specific job-related science knowledge you can get through your job training while you are in that industry.
