Careers: When to specialise (V0331)

John Monro from Crop & Food Research (now called Plant & Food Research) explains why students shouldn’t specialise too early in their careers.

It is important to consider when to specialise in your career and to be open to learning throughout your life. Here, John Monro offers some advice to students thinking about going to university.

Transcript

John Monro (Plant & Food Research): Students shouldn’t specialise too soon, or if they are going to specialise, they should specialise in things that are going to be hard for them to pick up later on – maybe some of the more difficult things, like maths and physics.

And not to think that learning is only for the period of time they are at university. All through life you go on learning. You’re a student as long as you… as you’re alive if you want to be.
