Brian Thomson was able to use his honours degree in zoology and ecology, and his love of the outdoors, to secure a position at the AgResearch Reproduction Facility. As part of his job, Brian traps possums, cares for them and undertakes a number of observations and lab procedures for the biocontrol research programme.
Transcript
Brian Thompson (AgResearch): I think the best thing about my job is working with the animals, I really enjoy that, they’ve all got their own little characteristics and personalities. Some are great to work with and some are difficult and they present little challenges and its very rewarding.
Researcher (AgResearch): How old do you think it is, Brian?
Brian Thompson (AgResearch): Oh, I'd guess it's almost 100 days old.
Researcher (AgResearch): And what sex is it?
Brian Thompson (AgResearch): It's a male.
Brian Thompson (AgResearch): I was interested in science, I did science at secondary school. I think school teachers along the way were quite encouraging. I certainly had an interest in plants and horticulture when I was at school and I thought I was more going down that line, but animals are a lot more exciting, they actually do things.
